Dentistry for Children and Fissure Sealants

Pediatric Dentist: Microscopic Dentistry for the Youngest Patients
Pediatric Dentistry: Microscopic Dentistry for Children
Even for children, we use the microscope exclusively for dental examinations and treatments. This makes the procedures more effective and, for young patients, much more exciting than many adults remember from their own childhood.
The Importance of Baby Teeth
Baby teeth serve as important placeholders for permanent teeth and should remain as healthy as possible to avoid premature loss. They stay in the mouth until around age 12. Leaving diseased baby teeth untreated can lead to pain and overcrowding for the permanent teeth. Proper oral hygiene, including the use of dental floss (!!!), and a healthy diet should be top priorities as soon as the first tooth emerges.
Use of Modern Technology in Pediatric Dentistry
Our practice employs advanced technologies like microscopes and air abrasion systems to make treatments as comfortable and effective as possible. The air abrasion system minimizes drilling noise, which is especially important for children. However, any filling in baby teeth is one too many. That’s why it’s crucial to use dental floss every evening before bed and avoid sugary drinks at home. Thank you on behalf of your child.
Treatment Philosophy: No Fear at the Dentist
We emphasize creating a fear-free environment for children. Treatments are never performed against a child’s will. Sometimes, this means an appointment may not involve any direct dental treatment until the child is ready. Once children build trust with us, they are usually very cooperative during treatments. (This is especially true when they can watch a DVD from our child-friendly selection through video glasses during their treatment.)
Fissure Sealants: Cavity Prevention for Children Starting at Age 6
Beginning at age 6, when the first permanent teeth emerge, we start fissure sealing under the microscope. Fissures are “deep grooves or pits” on the chewing surfaces of teeth that vary in depth from person to person. Toothbrushes cannot reach these grooves because they are too narrow and deep. As a result, food debris and bacteria often accumulate in the fissures from the time the teeth emerge (typically between ages 6 and 11). Without annual checks, these bacteria are likely to cause cavities sooner or later, depending on diet and genetic predisposition.
If we detect the need for fissure sealing during a yearly check-up, this procedure helps prevent cavities on the chewing surfaces or stop early-stage decay. By using a microscope and air abrasion, we can remove beginning decay without affecting healthy tooth structure.
Dental Visits for Teenagers
To make dental visits enjoyable for teenagers, we use digital video glasses that allow them to watch movies during their treatment, keeping them distracted and relaxed. Additionally, we ensure they understand the importance of using interdental brushes every evening starting at ages 15–16. Without interdental brushes, most patients are at risk for gum and/or bone inflammation.
Final Note
Our practice is dedicated to promoting and maintaining the oral health of children and teenagers through the use of advanced technology and a child-friendly treatment philosophy. With the help of microscopes and air abrasion, we provide precise treatments to give children the best possible start to a lifetime of oral health.
3 advantages of microscopic dentistry
1
Diagnosis and treatment with a microscope lead to lifelong oral health
2
10-year warranty on fillings, veneers, crowns, and bridges performed by me
3
Prevention and education minimize the need for further dental treatments

You can only treat properly what you can see. The microscope allows us to precisely examine and treat teeth and gums with up to 20x magnification. We therefore give our patients a 10-year guarantee on microscope-based treatments (except root canals).
