Microscopic endodontics, also known as root canal treatment using a microscope, was originally developed in the United States, where root canal specialists almost exclusively rely on microscopic assistance. Over time, this method has become the gold standard worldwide.

In Austria, I began using the microscope more than 20 years ago. Not only can I now look back on over two decades of root canal treatment experience with a microscope, but I am also able to perform fillings in cases where “regular” dentists would typically resort to a root canal treatment.

Common Complications with Traditional Root Canal Treatments

Root canal treatments without a microscope carry several risks due to limited visibility and precision:

  • Incomplete Cleaning: Without magnification, parts of the root canal system may be overlooked, leading to incomplete removal of infected material.
  • Instrument Breakage: In narrow or curved canals, instruments can easily break and remain inside the tooth.
  • Perforation: There is a higher risk of accidentally drilling through the root or sidewall of the tooth, causing additional damage.
  • Over- or Underfilling: Without precise control, filling materials can be applied incorrectly, potentially causing inflammation and subsequent issues.
  • Overlooked Additional Canals: Root canal systems are often complex and branched. Hidden or additional canals may be missed without microscopic magnification, resulting in persistent infections.

Advantages of Microscopic Root Canal Treatment

  • Enhanced Visualization: Magnification allows the dentist to accurately identify and treat the root canal system.
  • Increased Precision: Exact control of instruments reduces the risk of breakage and perforations.
  • Higher Success Rate: Precision treatment effectively minimizes inflammation and infections.
  • Minimally Invasive Treatment: Microscopy enables less invasive procedures, preserving the tooth for as long as possible.

Toothache? Treat Early and Accurately

Timely intervention for tooth damage can often prevent the need for a root canal treatment. For this reason, patients should attend regular check-ups and promptly address any tooth pain or problems.

The use of a microscope by the dentist provides enormous advantages for patients, even during root canal treatments.
